Ramipril (Altace)

Pronunciation RAM-i-pril
Drug Class ACE inhibitor (Angiotensin Converting Enzyme inhibitor)
Uses
  • Treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Improving survival after heart attack
Important Warnings
  • Pregnancy Category D: Can cause fetal harm or death (especially 2nd/3rd trimester)
  • Avoid if allergic to ACE inhibitors
  • Do not use with aliskiren if diabetic or with kidney disease
Before Taking Inform your doctor if you have:
  • Kidney disease or on dialysis
  • Liver disease
  • Diabetes
  • Connective tissue diseases (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.)
Dosage Instructions
Condition Initial Dose Maintenance Dose
Hypertension 2.5 mg once daily 2.5-20 mg daily (1-2 divided doses)
Heart Failure 2.5 mg twice daily 5 mg twice daily
Post-Heart Attack 2.5 mg twice daily 5 mg twice daily

Take with or without food. Can mix with apple juice/applesauce if needed.
Side Effects

Seek immediate help for:

  • Allergic reactions (swelling, difficulty breathing)
  • Chest pain
  • Fainting
  • Kidney problems (urination changes)

Common side effects:

  • Headache
  • Cough
  • Dizziness/fatigue
Precautions
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Limit potassium supplements
  • Stay hydrated
  • Monitor blood pressure regularly
